About this site

Hello! I'm Elric (aka The Budgetopian).

When I moved to London, where I currently live with my partner, I was keen to keep on top of the financial habits I'd formed over the past few years having been utterly skint for much of my 20's.

I've worked hard to change my mindset towards money to enable me to feel I can spend on the things that bring me genuine happiness - the outdoors, an unhealthy obsession with speciality coffee, and trying overpriced restaurants - whilst limiting things that keep me constantly feeling behind in my financial journey. I'm not a millionaire, and I've never earned more than a just about below average salary, yet on top of being a student in the most expensive city in the UK I feel I'm able to keep moving forward, one step at a time, when so many of us feel that we'll never be able to get there.

I've started this website to help people in the UK understand and take control of their finances. After spending my early twenty's feeling frustrated and hopeless about my financial situation, I started reading books, listening to podcasts and generally absorbing myself in the world of personal finance.

Despite the wealth of knowledge out there, much of it can be overcomplicated, focussed away from the UK or targeted at people much further along in their financial journey's.

I wanted to create a space I could write about finance, share information and create a likeminded community without giving my friends more reasons not to invite me to the pub. I want to deliver entertaining and actionable content to help people start making a real change towards their financial future, as well as give me something to focus my mind on when I'm not thinking about my postgraduate Occupational Therapy degree!

Although nothing here is financial advice, because it isn't tailored to you, I hope you find the information shared brings you hope and confidence in managing your finances moving forward, giving you greater control and freedom with your future. And maybe a few giggles along the way.

Take care and glad you're here,

Elric x
